stipend
STIPEND
The NDSEG fellowship also provides stipends, prorated monthly based on a 12- month academic year. Stipend amounts are determined for each Fellowship class by the DoD. The monthly stipend is $3,400 ($40,800 annually).
- The availability of funds for the second, and third year of each three-year award is contingent upon certification to the DoD awarding agency by the fellow's institution that the fellow has made satisfactory academic progress toward an advanced degree in one of the science or engineering fields.
- If the fellow is not enrolled in institutionally approved academic study and/or research during the summer months, financial support will not be provided. There are no dependent allowances.
taxes
TAXES
While serving under the NDSEG Fellowship Program, fellowship recipients are NOT considered independent contractors and are NOT employees of either the United States DOD or Innovative Technology Solutions JV, LLC (ITS JV, LLC) the administrators of the program.
- Fellowship recipients are responsible for the payment of all federal and state taxes based upon their fellowship income.
- Fellows will receive a Statement of Payments form detailing all taxable payments made to them by ITS JV, LLC during the relevant tax year.
deferrals
DEFERRALS
An NDSEG fellow may be granted one or more deferrals from the NDSEG Program. A fellow may receive up to 12 months in deferral(s). Deferrals may be granted under the following conditions with prior written CO approval:
- The fellow is fulfilling an active-duty military service obligation with the Department of Defense.
- The fellow has a diagnosis of a health condition that prevents fellow from progressing in their academic studies.
- A fellow's immediate family member requires medical care or assistance from the fellow.
- Upon return to the program, the fellow will be granted an extension equal in length to the deferral. Failure of fellow to return to academic studies after 12 months will result in removal from program.
health insurance
HEALTH INSURANCE
The NDSEG Fellowship will pay for the minimum health insurance coverage offered through the institution, up to a total value of $1,400 annually.
- If the fellow's institution does not offer health insurance, but the institution requires the fellow to maintain health insurance to enroll, the fellow may be reimbursed for health insurance costs up to $1,400 annually.
- Only the health insurance costs of the fellow will be covered. Any excess insurance costs will be the responsibility of the fellow and can be paid using the stipend.
tuition
TUITION
The NDSEG fellowship will pay the fellow’s full tuition and required fees (excluding room and board).
- Tuition and fees shall be electronically transferred directly to the educational institution’s financial institution at the beginning of each semester/quarter of enrollment.
- If the fellow is not enrolled in institutionally approved academic study and/or research during the summer months, financial support will not be provided.
